Artist Statement
Comics allow me to explore the natural and supernatural world through a fantastical lens. My passion is to create worlds of wonder inhabited with fun and relatable characters. I get to explore real world problems and mysteries of the spiritual and natural world to illustrate them
through the novel art of storytelling. With painting my passion is to portray what I see in magnificent color bringing the viewers into the story as participants. I paint the natural world on a regular basis using on-site observation and depict spiritual and Biblical themes through a symbolic process to immerse the viewer in the truth. Watercolor is used to effect by creating atmosphere. People and animals are often
added to a story to elevate it beyond just being a beautiful scene. Painting outdoors, plein air, provides endless amounts of inspiration. Every scene has a new lighting scenario and activities to engage my creative imagination. I participate with what I paint. I am part of the story, so that the viewer can be part of the story as well. I, also, enjoy community involvement in my art. Teaching classes and painting en plein air are both opportunities to build relationships. Painting with the Central Ohio Plein Air group allows me to build a community amongst artists which perpetuates my excitement about my craft and about new and interesting places. Outdoor painting always presents a new adventure.
